Everything you need to know about custom backpack coolers

Custom backpack coolers are insulated soft coolers built like a daypack — padded shoulder straps, a leakproof lined main compartment, and outside pockets — printed or embroidered with your logo. They carry what a shoulder-strap cooler carries, but on the back, which changes what people can do with them: walk 18 holes, hike to the far field, haul a ladder, push a stroller, carry a chair in each hand.

Choosing well comes down to capacity (quoted in cans, the industry’s honest unit), insulation and liner construction, and which imprint areas your artwork should own. This guide compares the common capacity classes and their typical bag sizes, walks through insulation and materials, covers decoration options from screen print to embroidery, and explains how bulk pricing scales from a golf-outing order to company-wide swag. Why go custom

The swag that gets carried for years, not binned by Friday

Most branded giveaways die in a drawer. A custom backpack cooler gets packed for every game, beach day and job site for years — and your logo rides along on the most visible panel of the most useful thing you’ve ever handed out.

Hands-free by design

Padded straps put the weight on shoulders, not one aching hand — which is why backpack coolers go where duffel coolers get left behind.

Cold that lasts the day

Thick foam insulation and a heat-sealed leakproof liner keep ice through a full outing — drinks stay cold from the first tee to the nineteenth hole.

A billboard on the move

The front panel is one of the largest imprint areas in promotional products — your logo reads across a fairway, a festival lawn or a job site.

Capacity & sizes

Backpack cooler sizes: how many cans do you need to carry?

Backpack coolers are sized by can count — cans plus ice is the honest test of a cooler. Capacity drives the bag’s height and weight on the back, so the right size depends on who’s carrying it and how far. Here’s how the common classes compare.

Can capacity by model class

0 8 16 24 32 Cans (with ice) 12-can Compact 18-can Mid-size 24-can Most ordered 30-can Expedition

Rated capacities assume cans plus ice in typical model dimensions — a 12-can pack runs about the size of a slim daypack; a 30-can is a full-height hauler.

Imprint area by location (approx.)

Typical decorable areas; exact dimensions vary by model and are confirmed on your proof. The front panel is the flagship placement.

Insulation & materials

Built like a pack, insulated like a cooler

The shell is rugged polyester or ripstop fabric with reinforced stitching at the straps and handle — the parts that carry the load. Inside, a layer of thick closed-cell foam wraps a heat-sealed PEVA liner: leakproof so melted ice stays in the bag, wipeable so Monday’s cooler doesn’t smell like Saturday’s tailgate.

Comfort hardware is what separates a backpack cooler from a cooler with straps sewn on: contoured padded shoulder straps, a padded back panel, sternum clips on larger models, and exterior pockets for the dry stuff — napkins, sunscreen, a bluetooth speaker. Zippers are oversized so the lid opens wide with one hand while the other holds whatever the day is about.

  • Leakproof PEVA liner — heat-sealed seams, melted ice stays put
  • Closed-cell foam insulation — holds ice through a full-day outing
  • Padded straps & back panel — comfortable fully loaded
  • Rugged polyester shell — reinforced at every load point
  • Dry storage pockets — front zip pocket and mesh side pockets
  • Wipe-clean interior — rinse, air out, repack
Customization options

Brand every panel that faces the crowd

Screen-printed logos

Bold one- to multi-color prints on the front panel — the biggest, most visible canvas on the bag.

Embroidery

Stitched logos on the front pocket or lid for a premium, retail-quality finish on executive and client gifts.

Full-color transfers

Photo-quality artwork and gradients where screen printing can’t go — event art, mascots, sponsor walls.

Bag colors

Shell colors from corporate navy to safety orange, matched as closely as possible to your brand palette.

Multi-location decoration

Front panel plus pocket, lid or strap — put the logo where it reads and the tagline where it’s found.

Capacity mix

Split one order across sizes — 24-can for the crew leads, 12-can for the field team — under one artwork setup.

Bulk pricing

How custom backpack cooler pricing works

Backpack coolers price per bag, and the unit price steps down at volume as artwork setup is shared across the run. Your quote depends on capacity class, decoration method and locations, number of imprint colors, and total quantity. One logo, one location, one big run is the sharpest price per bag.

FAQ

Custom backpack cooler questions, answered

What’s the minimum order for custom backpack coolers?
The minimum order is 12 bags, so even a small golf outing qualifies. Per-bag pricing improves through the tiers, with the best rates at event scale. Send your target quantity for exact numbers.
How many cans does a backpack cooler actually hold?
Rated honestly — cans plus ice — the common classes run 12, 18, 24 and 30 cans. A 12-can pack feels like a slim daypack; a 30-can is a full-height hauler for group days. Capacity ratings without ice are marketing; ours include it.
How long does it keep things cold?
With a reasonable ice-to-drinks ratio, the closed-cell foam and sealed liner hold ice through a full-day outing in typical conditions. Sun, repeated opening and ambient heat shorten any soft cooler’s window — pre-chilling drinks helps every bag.
Is the liner really leakproof?
The main compartment uses a heat-sealed PEVA liner, so melted ice stays in the bag rather than down someone’s back. It’s also wipeable — rinse, air out, repack.
Where can the logo go?
The front panel is the flagship placement (roughly an 8" square on full-size models), with the front pocket, lid and straps as secondary locations. Multi-location decoration is available; exact areas are confirmed on your mockup.
Screen print, embroidery or full-color — which should we pick?
Screen printing is the value pick for bold logos at volume; embroidery reads premium on client and executive gifts; full-color transfers handle gradients, photos and multi-sponsor art. We’ll recommend based on your artwork and audience.
Can we split an order across sizes or colors?
Yes — one artwork setup can run across capacity classes and shell colors in a single order, so crew leads get the 24-can and the field team gets 12-cans, all matching.
What are the bags made of?
Rugged polyester or ripstop shells with reinforced stitching at straps and handles, closed-cell foam insulation, heat-sealed PEVA liners, padded straps and back panels, and oversized zippers.
What artwork format do you need?
Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG) work for every decoration method; embroidery and transfers can also work from high-resolution images. Send what you have and we’ll flag anything that needs redrawing before proofing.
Can you match our brand colors?
Imprint colors can be matched to specified Pantone (PMS) colors; shell colors come from each model’s standard range, and we’ll pick the closest match to your palette and show it on the mockup.
What’s the turnaround time?
Most orders ship within a few weeks of proof approval, depending on quantity and decoration method. Working toward an outing or retreat date? Put it in the quote request and we’ll confirm feasibility before you commit.
Can you ship directly to our event or multiple offices?
Yes — orders ship nationwide and can be split across destinations, so the outing’s bags arrive at the course while the rest go to HQ. Note split shipping in your quote request.
Do you offer samples before a full run?
For larger orders we can arrange a pre-production sample or a blank model sample so you can check size, comfort and construction in hand before the run decorates. Ask when you request your quote.
How do I get a quote?
Use the custom quote form with your capacity, quantity, artwork and event date, and we’ll send back pricing, a mockup and a production timeline.
